Dear Citizens,
Our schools are one of the most important sanctuaries we have for our children. It is our job to ensure that they have a stimulating and safe learning environment, free from the violence and distractions so common to our society. I strongly believe that the Point Pleasant Police Department's School Resource Officer Program will help provide our children with the environment that they need to learn and grow in.
The school resource officer program is a nationally accepted program involving the placement of a law enforcement officer within the educational environment on several different levels. The officer will be involved in a variety of functions;
- As a visible, active law enforcement figure on campus dealing with any law related issues.
- As a classroom resource for instruction in the following areas; law related education, violence diffusion, safety programs, alcohol and drug prevention, crime prevention and other areas.
- As a member of the faculty and administrative team working hand in hand to solve problems in the school community.
- As a resource for the students which will enable them to be associated with a law enforcement figure in their school environment.
- As a resource to teachers, parents and students for conferences on an individual basis, dealing with individual problems or questions.
- As a counseling resource in areas which may affect the educational environment but may be of a law related nature.
Officer Christopher Woit is assigned Point Pleasant Borough High School as the school resource officer. Officer Charles Ackerman is assigned to Memorial Middle School as well as periodically checking the elementary schools. Both officers went through comprehensive School Resource Officer training program. The goals of both officers are;
- Bridge the gap between police officers and young people while increasing positive attitudes towards law enforcement.
- Teach the value of our legal system.
- Promote respect for people and property.
- Reduce juvenile crime by helping students formulate an awareness of rules, authority and justice.
- To take a personal interest in students and their activities.
- To allow students access to the legal system.
- To give students a realistic picture of our laws and legal system so they will have an investment in supporting and improving it.
- Teach students how to avoid becoming a victim through self awareness and crime prevention.
I believe that our School Resource Officer Program will benefit our children, our schools, our community and our police department. I hope you share in my enthusiasm that this program will be extremely effective and successful and that it can only serve to enhance your child's educational experience. If you would like additional information about the School Resource Program please call Detective Sergeant Robert Wells or myself at 732-892-0060.
Sincerely,
Lawrence R. Williams
